How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank?
The frequency of pumping depends on the size of your tank and the number of people in your household. As a general rule, a septic tank should be pumped every 3 to 5 years. However, households with more occupants or heavy water usage may need more frequent service.
Signs Your Tank Needs Pumping
- Slow drains throughout the house
- Gurgling sounds in the plumbing
- Sewage odors inside or outside the home
- Pooling water or wet spots near the drain field
- Sewage backup in toilets, drains, or sinks
Tips for a Healthy Septic System
- Conserve water to reduce the load on your system
- Never flush wipes, feminine products, or other non-biodegradable items
- Avoid pouring grease, oils, or harsh chemicals down the drain
- Keep heavy vehicles and equipment off the drain field
- Plant only grass over the drain field — trees and shrubs can damage pipes
- Have your system inspected and pumped regularly
What NOT to Flush
- Baby wipes or "flushable" wipes
- Paper towels or tissues
- Feminine hygiene products
- Cigarette butts
- Dental floss
- Medications or chemicals
- Coffee grounds or food scraps
